WallI wanted a control setup that would help with my instrument rating so I bought the Saitek yoke. Others might have different experiences but I found, although the Saitek has great features and looks, the elevator control was not smooth especially in the middle as it has a sort of detent. For me it made subtle elevator changes crucial to maintaining accurate altitude and ROD's frustrating. I ended up buying a CH Products Eclipse yoke , quite ugly in comparison to the cool Saitek, but its really smooth , far more like flying the real thing to me. Tiny elevator changes are no problems. I still use the Saitek throttle quadrant and pedals , no complaints with either of these. As far as software I use FSX on Windows XP , and if your serious about learning to use the Garmin GNS 430 the Reality XP Garmin GNS 430 addon for FSX is a must have. Having to learn to do RNAV approaches with the GNS 430 in the real aircraft I can tell you this addon has the exact same functionality as the real deal.

Diddoo, I use a Saitek X52 Pro Flight Control System and swear by it. It allows you to program functions to the toggles and switches, and then save various profiles. It can handle 256 assignments per profile - far more than I ever need or remember! Then you can then load the profile depending on what you're flying, eg. I have different profiles for Jet versus piston GA for example. It has rotary dials which are perfect for flaps (e.g Cessna have variable flaps position) and even better for controlling spoilers during Jet landings. With my left thumb I just dial in and out the spoilers on descent and final to control speed and profile. Do some searches on it on the Web and see what people say about it. I loaned it to a friend of mine who is a mad keen simmer far more than I am and he absolutely fell in love with it. He now wants one. Shop around for prices. I was able to knock about $30 off mine from PC Aviator in Melbourne, but it's still over $300.
I looked at the Saitek Yoke in Dick Smith and the quality of build seems cheap. Far too light in the controls, like a cheap chinese toy. I'm happy to chat further if you like for more info. I'm also into creating new keyboard functions for FSX if you're interested to chat further. E.g. FSX only has "Gear cycle" which means you can accidentaly cycle gear back up if you're not careful. I deleted this command within FSX, and created two separate commands, one for Gear Down and one for Gear Up (obviously!). Now I can select 'gear down' a second or third time, just like touching the gear lever in the down position in real aircraft, and the gear won't go back up until I select Gear Up. Cheers mate. Jump Pilot.

oh dear... looks like this page doesn't like links?
In that case a general guide to flight controls for PC would be great CH or Saitek seem to be the 2 main ones available... Pros/Cons for each would be great and recommendations. PS: if an admin sees this, can we cull the crappy links from my previous post?... thanks

Hi there,
Can anyone give a comparison of these products. looking at teaming them up with FSX. trying to decide if the Saitek are worth the extra cash.. fairly large difference when you put it all together.. is it worth it though? UGW, I haven't been back here for while, but anyway, you have a question that I haven't answered. Yes, I also use XP SP3. It's runs great on my new system, which ended up being a Intel Core2 Quad Q9550, 2.8 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, nVidia 9800 GT card, 2 x 22" HD widescreen monitors (just over 1 metre in combined width!), Sata hard drives and Saitek X52 Pro system. In the past 6 months I've learnt a lot about setting up FSX, from config files, defrag, where you locate FSX on your hard drive, frame rates, etc. I think I became addicted to tweaking! I now get usually 30 to 70 fps.
Although there are better video cards available, what I have here is a well balanced system that works really well. What I'm planning on is a second SATA hard drive to separate FSX.

Howdy all,
Showing my age a bit, but I used the first version of FS when I got my PPL back in 86/87 (think 360kb floppy disk on IBM XT :)). It helped heaps with my navigation training - even if only using keyboard controls (mice on PCs weren't cool back then!). As for scenery - what scenery - very basic, and only a couple of aircraft to choose from as well. I now have FSX, which I use to keep in touch with the instruments, as living in Tassie in winter doesn't provide much opportunity for any serious flying. I have a Logitech 3dPro joystick, which although fine, is a bit fiddly. Thinking about the Saitek yoke and adding a couple of monitors, but will probably have to upgrade the mothership to support the extra graphics processing. I may only be certified on PA28/32, but the temptation to launch a 737 or A320 is often too great. Good fun, though.

Hi All, Have been flight simming for over 15 years now. I have FSX and the Saitek yoke, controls and rudder pedals. Believe me, they are a MUST HAVE if you want to fly realistically. Also, get the ORBx SP3 DVD and purchase some airports. You really need to spend some money on improving FSX. As far as hardware, get the best you can afford as it will be out of date in a year or two. I have a Quad core 9450 2.66 Ghz and 24" HD LCD screen, Nvidia 8800GT card and it works quite well but you need to tweak the fsx.cfg file to get optimum performance - smoothness and best framerates.
Brendan - your system sound fine. What operating system?? I find Win XP SP3 still works best for me. Cheers Greg.

Shane, I looked at the Saitek Yoke and throttle for realism, but it seemed, big, bulky and cheap plastic feel to it. Also had very limited switches and controles that would have meant freqently looking a the keyboard. So recently I've ordered a Saitek X52 Pro Flight Control System (separate joystick and throttle) and I look forward to it. Heaps of features, and having borrowed a joystick from a friend, the realism of trim (or not) and control position is really good from the joystick. I was able to fly the King Air at 100' off the deck in the 'Edwards Airforce Base' mission with no probs. The joy stick was fine.
Cheers.

G'day
I found that while I was doing my flight training for PPL, I found flight MFSX a valuable addition to hands on training. I would practice the next lesson on the sim, just to get a possile insight to the lesson.

Gday all. What type of controls do you use? Do yokes give you better control and realism?
