My first NavEx. YMMB-YWAK-YLTV-YMMB

After passing my GFPT, it's straight onto my first NavEx. After a long pre-flight brief the day before the flight about flight planning, map reading, 1 in 60 and other things, I felt a little drained but at the same time really excited about the flight to come, I get to fly out of the training area and to some places. The change of scenery was exciting. On the day of the flight, my instructor and I went through the planning again, it was much easier now that I have slept on it and the "whizz wheel" seemed much much easier to use too. The weather looked okay at where we were going to go, YLTV(LaTrobe Valley) so we were all planned with headings and ETA's calculated for the flight. All that was left was to wait for the plane, TAK to come back. A colleague of mine came along for the ride and I didn't know it but he took a few photos and a video of my landing back at YMMB after the NavEx (see below) and enjoy!. The flight was great, I got to put in a 1 in 60 on my first leg and manage to get a position fix as well. I was "fooled by the map" after trying to identify the landmark, the 1 in 60 worked and we were tracking to YWAK after the correction. Off to YLTV, we tried to spot the tower close to Forster on the way there and I realised how challenging it was to identify it. I was really surprised how well the calculations I made prior to the flight were right on the money! Overflying YLTV, I had a couple of touch and go's, the first one was very hairy on runway 21 with a stiff crosswind. Experienced a bit of windshear about 50ft from the ground and almost made a meal of it, the second touch and go was much better as I was expecting the windshear but the wind had also died down a bit. Back to YMMB, I was enjoying the scenery and was in my own world with the CLEAROF checks and also position fixed Warragul as well without the instructor reminding me. Back to the training area and GMH I landed without a hitch (see video) it was one of my better ones, kissing the tarmac. Was told by the instructor and the self loading freight the landing was a really good one. Can't wait for the next NavEx but need to allow time for the wallet to repair itself after NavEx! hehe

Well done Methylnick. I did my second navex last week and about to go for my third on Tuesday. I tell ya, it's the little things that make the flight manageable - for me anyway. Giving yourself extra time to plan, your kit of stuff to carry into the cockpit etc. My first one was just bad but then I didn't have much to do except fly, do a couple of T&Gs and land back at base.

But I have also caught myself getting distracted and tired at the end of a 3 hour flight. And this week's flight near the tail-end nearly ended badly except that the CFI rectified it fortunately. I think if I was flying solo, I'd probably be on the evening news (enough said).

Hopefully, the experience will help lift my game.

Gotta laugh at your comment re. cost. You're not wrong there... For the cost of these 8-10 XC navs, I could easily holiday in Europe and return with loose change.
