Disappointing for passengers, however QANTAS did need to do something radical to their workforce if they're going to move operations from Australia to wherever in Asia they'll end up.

Honestly considering all the airlines they're competing with internationally are Government owned (Malaysia, British, Air France, Emarites, Ethiad, Singapore etc) the Government could score a good deal if they bought QANTAS back, since the stock price is $1 less than what they'd sell it for. It'd never happen though...

My guess (8:50pm Sunday) is they'll go into 120 days suspension to the industrial action. It'll be an interesting 4 months!

The only way that Qantas will survive is if they take a tough stand now. The GFC has meant that the competitive environment has become incredibly intense with governments backing their own airline.....it's really hard to compete in an unlevel playing field.

What would be better is to pay staff any increases in shares that are escrowed for 3 years. Then management, staff and investors are all joined at the hip while not costing cash.

Something has to give, buying planes and fuel in US$ and paying locals in AUD is fine when the aussie dollar is low against the US. Not sure how the international arm can lose $200m in a year when they sell the most expensive tickets operating out of Australia. Don't know why I'm commenting; all I say is Singapore airlines is great.

By being a fraction less efficient that they should be! (and it is just a fraction that makes all the difference) Honestly, $200M is not that much money. I reckon they pay their 1500 pilots a combined $300M/year (average $200K per pilot) and that's without paying for anything else. No doubt they take in several billion in revenue.

At the same time, the profit the group makes as a whole is less that 2% of revenue. Very thin margins indeed and a workforce being forced to be more productive (not replacing people that leave) and no pay increases (not even inflation adjustment) would make a huge difference to the bottom line.

If they want to have a job at all in 10 years time, I would suggest that's the kind of offer unions make to management...

Basell, I could agree with you more.
Qantas is close to death due to the high $AU and the unions just don't really get it. Any job has got to be better than no job at all. The 2% return is tiny....in fact, it would be better if Qantas closed down and put any spare cash in the bank.

I heard a senator say that the CEO of Qantas should not be allowed to stop planes from flying and that he would introduce legislation to prevent it. Sounds to me like the government is now going to run a private business.....I would be FURIOUS as a shareholder!

I saw a report that had Qantas being the only major player with wages being around 25-30% of their costs. All the others have pulled them back to around 15-18%. I know Singapore used to pay well (ie parity with Q) but even they plunged their wages a couple of years back to around 18%. Q really stands out from the crowd regarding wages now, it's no wonder they can't compete. I have a feeling however that they aren't on a level playin field...

Discussing the Qantas stoush should almost be put in to the "Religion and Politics" bucket given the vast and often passionate opinions on the matter

As with any relationship breakup, there are always two sides to every story with both parties thinking their version of the truth is the real truth, whereas the truth generally lies somewhere in between.

It appears that some of the salaries cited by management are exaggerated and do not show a true representation of what most of their staff are on.

Raptor would probably be the best to comment on how pilot salaries compare.

The main thing that the staff are fighting seems to be for some job security as they're seeing more and more jobs head overseas and the erosion of the Qantas brand.

Personally I must say I'm glad I sold my QAN shares a while ago for a tidy profit (1 day before the A380 incident!).

Just my two cents.
