Hi all,

It's coming up to Christmas time again, and my parents are starting to ask me what I'd like. I asked for the obvious - flight hours - but apparantly they want something they can wrap. So I asked for a plane

I have a feeling out of those two, I'm going to be getting the flight hours!

Anyways, I'm thinking that at some point eventually I must start navs and so will need a flight bag to carry all the associated stuff. Right now I manage to fit everything in my pockets but I have a feeling that my pockets just aren't going to cut it eventually.

The problem is that I have absolutely NO idea what I'm looking for. I've no idea about size (how much stuff do you need on navs?), number of pockets, anything!

So, basically, I'm asking for any advice anyone has on flight bags...

I'm assuming I don't want anything too big though for ease of use though, since it isn't exactly THAT roomy in the plane...

Also, most flight bags don't seem to have a shoulder strap, is it generally not recommended to have a shoulder strap on a bag floating around the cockpit or anything?

Also, I have a LightSpeed Zulu headset which don't seem to fold away as small as some other headsets, has anyone had issues with fitting a LightSpeed into a normal flight bag? Do you need to allow any extra space at all?

I've been looking at this bag: Crumpler Barney Rustle Blanket. Has anyone got one of these or used anything similar? According to the website it can hold two 6-packs of stubbies, so it seems a good size but not too big...

Basically, any advice would be helpful because, as I said, I've absolutely no idea what I'd need or should be looking for.

A bag called a blanket ... Hmmm and it's a pretty cool bag to boot! Great bag site as well!

!BUT! I see this all the time - most pilots schlepping around a ton of stuff in a bag so big it will only fit in the baggage compartment and needs to be noted on the weight and balance form as a seperate item. Bad luck when they need to access it, it often involves getting passengers to rummage around in it as they are the only folk who can reach behind the back seat.

Personally I like a small bag like the Albert Stash. A bag this size will fit between your legs and the front seat and all that is in it will be accessible in flight. You can use a shoulder strap when wandering around the airport and your headset, in it's seperate bag, can clip to the outside when you are ambulatory.

My question is; what exactly is in those huge flight bags I see? Can someone enlighten me?

When I did my commercial training I was permitted to take the following:

Relevant maps - held together with a large bulldog clip
Flight plan - clipped in with the maps
Flight computer, rule and protractor - stashed in the aircraft pockets
Biro and pencil - in top pocket.
Headset - on head

On a commercial charter in a light aircraft there is often not much room for anything else.

I have used a 'Brightline Flight bag',for a number of years.I won't go into the bag itself,but it has all the pockets.and storage,that you will ever need,and the bag itself,comes apart into two sections,so that you can use one to carry your headset,or just leave it in one piece.and use it as a combined flight bag/headset bag.As I said I could explain it's construction,but better that you crack into the Tristar Aviation website,at YMMB,click on pilot shop,and go from there (pilot gear-bags etc.. ). I just double checked the site,before I posted this reply. Two sizes,one taller ($189.00),normal size ($179.00}.Hope that gives you a help,in choosing a flight bag.

Jack : I totally agree with you about the large type flight bags.The reason I chose the Brightline,is because,It is about the size of a large headset bag,and does fit between my legs,under the seat,and is with it's many pockets,a breeze to access in flight. Check out the above website Imentioned.And "yes",it does have a shoulder strap.

That's what I'm curious about too!

Having never done a nav, this is what I imagine I'd need (and I'm just guessing here remember):
- headset (will end up on head but would like to keep in same bag for ease of use, i.e. I'll forget it if I have to worry about too many bags)
- waterbottle
- pencils etc (in a pencil case presumably?)
- flight computer thingy
- sick bag (hasn't happened yet, but just in case

)
- kneeboard and maps and stuff
- ERSA (apparantly mandatory?)

All that doesn't seem like THAT much really...So what else do people carry in those huge bags?

The AlbertStash does look pretty good, lots of little pockets for stuff. The thing I was unsure about with the one I was looking at is the 'fold over' top which means that you can't really lean over and dig around with one had...or you can leave the top open and can, but then everything falls out and rolls around the plane...

I'm kind of looking for something a little different to the 'average black flight bag' that lots of websites seem to have...partly because I don't think I need anything that...professional...and also because I clearly need to look cool

(in case you didn't realise, I'm joking, practicality and function is more important...well, mostly)

Lest I be accused of flipancy ... An IFR pilot does need more documentation than a VFR pilot and a national IFR pilot needs a couple of large volumes called DAP's (amongst other things). An international IFR jockey may well need a wheely bag if he/she wants documents for all countries enroute. As I only fly VFR currently all I need is a smallish bag ...

I use a laptop bag. Fits all the maps, ERSA, VFG, prayer wheel etc and is cheaper than the purpose built jobs. No room for a headset though.

With the new Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) equipped cockpits, those mega-huge black box-like bags are no longer as necessary. In the past the airline pilots had to have procedure manuals, airways/airport docs and other bulky items in there. Plus many had clothes, a book, nibbles & water if they weren't also carrying an overnight bag.

I think there's some stories on PPRUNE (www.pprune.org) about what pilots are carrying in their flight bags

I recently purchased a Brightline Flight Bag from the US in time for my navs. I'm glad I did. Purchasing from the US was cheaper than Australian stores, and with the strong dollar, buying from overseas is a great move. I often have lots of clutter in bags but this bag forces me to be organised- it's ideal and I've even had instructors and people from the airport commenting on it.
In my bag I normally have:
- Headset
- Stopwatch
- Calculator
- Licence and medical
- Fuel tester
- Sick bags
- Spare glasses
- Leatherman
- Wallet, phone and keys
- Charts
- Log Book
- ERSA and other documents
- Pens, pencils etc.
- Flight computer
- Plotter
- Kneeboard

and the Brightline carries it all with ease and with room to spare. I would highly recommend it. It also has a shoulder strap.

+1 for the Brightline bags. I can fit everything I need in mine apart from Jepps, and I use a plate folder anyway.
