To take or not to take an Advanced Diploma? 4 Months ago
Hi guys!
Finally, I'm starting flight training on August/September and I just can't wait for it!
Now I just have to decide which school to go at between two schools: Moorabbin Flying Services in Melbourne and Johnston Aviation Services in Port Macquarie.
The first one offers a course in which I will take a IV Certificate (CPL and MECIR) and an Advanced Diploma (ATPL Theory), while the second one is a conventional flight school.
Obviously MFS is more expensive for several reasons like the certication and new aircrafts.
The question is written in the thread's title: to take or not to take an Advanced Diploma?
In either case I will start as flight instructor, but I don't know if an Advanced Diploma will make the difference or not later in my career.
Thanks in advance guys!

You can't really go wrong with either school, the diploma doesn't really mean anything other than giving you "another" piece of paper with your qualifications.
Even the Aviation degrees don't mean much in GA.
I'd stick with the school you gel with the most and given that you'll have to factor in living expenses while studying so make sure you consider that when calculating costs.
Lastly, do not under any circumstance pre-pay for any training!

I'm with Pathlot, the only reason that I would think about an Advanced Diploma,is if I was intending to get into the Airline,or Heavy Metal end of the aviation industry.I never had to get one when I was flying Heavies, which I still do.Mind you probably because they were not around then, when I started.

I do not want to short cut anything.
I just want to spend some time in GA before jumping on a jet or turboprop (I love the Q400 )
I was just wondering a IV certificate and an Advanced Degree would be a good choice for new pilots.

I recently renewed my instructor rating with Johnston Aviation and cannot speak highly enough of them. Port Macquarie is also a neat place to hang out.
My two bobs worth is to save bucks wherever possible and skip all that is an unnecessary expense on the road to a CPL. Hey it costs enough already.
I have been talking recently to some pilots who have just made the airlines, it seems the airlines conduct their own tests and a diploma means nothing much at all to them. These guys didn't have one.
This is aviation, not rocket science and it is practical experience that counts more than anything on paper. Both perhaps but paper certificates on their own mean squat.
